phd in philosophy distance learning in india

Create value for your life and career

A PhD by Research via Distance Learning perfectly adjusts to adult students’ needs, that is to people having work and family commitments yet willing to go through alternative academic path. Selinus University is an independent private international university that helps adult international students achieving their academic goals. Over the years, several surveys have shown that via Distance Learning PhDs by research can be as useful as those earned by traditional academic systems. Clearly, it has to be granted that the private institution is highly reputable. In this regard, Selinus University has acquired a respectable and trustworthy reputation, always giving personal skills and professionalism the deserved emphasis. Nowadays, Selinus University represents an important alternative to traditional studies, above all if we consider the digital era and the global village we live in. Our study system is geared towards busy people pacing today world rhythms. As a matter of fact, it is efficiently transmitted among computer devices anywhere in the world. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), in Latin: Philosophiae Doctor or Doctor Philosophiae, is the highest academic degree awarded. It usually covers all academic programs. As graduate researchers, PhD students are usually required to show competence, master their topic research but also carry out an original thesis so as to foster new academic contributions in their knowledge field. A PhD via distance learning is an original academic research in a specific branch of human knowledge. The candidate works autonomously and his/her project culminates in a final doctoral thesis. Unlike any other traditional campus based PhD, Selinus PhD by Research does not have semesters splitting; it rather consists in an independent and autonomous theoretical research on a specific academic area. This research is implemented in a final thesis that students shall complete within 24 months. Stress is given on independence during study and research; reason why students’ supervisors will not actually be tutor as in common understanding, but rather specialised consultants for students’ assistance. The student can use both textbooks and the Internet for research purpose besides having access to the online library. Working freely and independently on their research, students will grow highly specialized knowledge and specific expertise to display in their doctoral thesis defense. The Distance Learning PhD is earned after successfully completing and defending the final doctoral thesis in the academic major that has been chosen. The "Doctor of Philosophy" is the only PhD that can be obtained via Distance Learning. It should be quite clear that any laboratory method or professional practice cannot occur online or through any distance learning system. The main requirement for a distance learning PhD by Research is to submit and defend the final thesis whose minimum length have to be 90/100 pages. That will be reviewed and evaluated by an academic committee of the Selinus Unversity. In some cases, previous candidates’ publications may be relevant for PhD purposes. In case the thesis credits are not sufficient, in order to have all the required doctoral credits, additional in-depth reports (about 15-20 pages each) based on textbooks may also be requested. A PhD is often a very popular job requirement in many work areas. Especially in developing countries, with lack of basic job training, the Doctor of Philosophy gets more and more required not only for highly qualified professions, but also for multinationals, non-governmental organizations and private companies’ employments. Employees are asked for an academic "certification" higher than a Bachelor's or a Master's degree. A Master's degree is usually sufficient for most professions. The Ph.D., however, is the highest educational qualification. Only the best-qualified professionals have a Ph.D. To access the program, students need to possess a Master's degree or equivalent and be at least 30 years old. The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of 65 academic credits (about 1000 hours of study) that will be achieved through the final thesis. Distance learning Selinus PhD admission requirements are: Master Degree possession and suitable CV. There is no race, colour, sex, beliefs and/or religion discrimination. APEL (Accreditation Prior Experiential Learning) professional credits validation may contribute to the final evaluation of the thesis.

The cost of a PhD by research via Distance Learning is obviously much lower than a campus based doctorate.

School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions

The School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions has been functioning since 2016-17 and growing academically and logistically. It offers two Masters programs, namely – MA in Buddhist Studies, Philosophy & Comparative Religions and MA in Hindu Studies (Sanātana Dharma), along with the Global PhD program. These programs consist of a composite curriculum consisting of a History of Hindu and Buddhist traditions, a text-based study of different philosophical systems of India and a Comparative Study of Religions. The School also offers separate training in classical languages such as Pali, Sanskrit, and Tibetan to facilitate the reading of the primary Hindu and Buddhist texts. The skills imparted to students extend from rigorous reading of literary and philosophical texts to archaeological training.

The wider social-historical-cultural-religious contexts of the development of the Hindu and Buddhist traditions are examined through an innovative and intra-subject curriculum. The School fosters critical thinking and explores the cultural and historical contexts of Buddhism and Hindu traditions in different regions of India and Asia.

The Masters and PhD programs of SBSPCR inspire the students for collaborative research and engage them in a wide range of interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary activities in a cafeteria model so that the graduates of this program could be eligible for employment in academics and organisations that work with intercultural and multicultural issues.

The school follows the cafeteria model of curricula, which provides the students with a broader range of diverse subjects from the SBS and other Schools in the University.

distance-phd-in-india

PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the most sought-after academic qualification in India for students who have completed their master's courses like M.Sc., M.Tech, MBA, MCA, MPhil, M.A., M.Com, and others. The higher education system of India has expanded quite a lot in the past few years. With more and more students willing to study higher academic courses, the number of PhD candidates has also increased. It is estimated that after ten years, about 35% of all master's students in India will pursue a PhD. Candidates can obtain a PhD in their desired field if their area of research is relevant to their master's degree.

How to pursue Distance PhD in India?

As the name suggests, PhD is a doctoral academic course that offers students higher studies after they have completed their postgraduate course. The duration of this academic course is 3 years to 5 years. A PhD's final duration usually depends on the student's academic rigor and the university's decision. As it's a doctoral course, candidates have to perform academic research in their field of study. Academic research is the soul of a student's PhD course, and he/ she has to furnish a research thesis based on his/ her scholarly research. After submitting and defending the research thesis in front of an academic panel, the student is granted a PhD by the university/ college.

Research students can perform research in various areas depending on their interest ranging from ancient core subjects to cutting-edge modern technology, Many students feel that a PhD is challenging and one has to clear several exams to obtain a seat at any university/ college, but this is not true. Students can easily pursue a distance PhD in India and get a valid degree after completing their studies. Nowadays, it is not just the government universities/ colleges that grant PhDs.

A lot of private universities have also opened up that are pretty good for pursuing a PhD. Students who don't wish to sit for highly competitive PhD entrance exams for admission to government universities/ colleges can opt to study PhD at private universities. As long as the research area is strong & relevant, the university doesn't matter.

Why should you consider obtaining PhD in India?

A few of the advantages of pursuing a PhD in India are mentioned below:

  • Availability & Diversity  – Various universities/ colleges in India grant a PhD. Along with that, there is a wide array of specializations that you can choose as your PhD subject in India. phd-correspondence-in-India

Both these formats are not suited for everyone who wishes to do a PhD in India. For some people, especially working professionals, taking out time to attend classes is not possible. For them, a distance Ph.D. in India is the best option. Students don't have to participate in regular classes and lectures at the college/ university in this option. Most of the process is conducted online, and students only have to appear for semester examinations. The guidance for research is also carried out online, but students have to defend their academic thesis at the university/ college at the final submission.

So, if you have the dream of obtaining a PhD in India but cannot devote your time to attend regular classes, a distance PhD in India is your best option. You don't have to worry about the degree's value as it will be at par with the regular PhD degree in India. You will get similar job opportunities in the academic sector as well as the professional industry.

There are around 800 universities/ colleges in India that currently grant a PhD. The types of universities that offer PhD courses in India are mentioned below:

  • Central Universities (under the government of India).
  • State Universities (under respective state governments).
  • Private Universities.
  • Deemed to be Universities.
  • Institutes of National Importance.

For every type of university, there is a difference in fees and eligibility criteria. Anyway, as mentioned above, if your research is good, the university/ college will hardly matter. In simple words, the value of your PhD depends on your research and not the type of university you are pursuing it from.

  • Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
  • Vardhman Mahaveer Open University (VMOU).
  • Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU).
  • Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU).
  • Nalanda Open University (NOU).
  • Dr B.R. Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU).

  • In your master's degree, you should have scored at least 55% marks in the overall subjects.
  • If you are a reserved category student from SC/ ST/ OBC background, you will receive a relaxation of either 5% or 10% in the required marks. This depends on the college/ university.
  • You will have to clear a PhD entrance test.
  • Some universities/ colleges in India may require the applicant to possess work experience in a relevant field.

The average tuition fee for a correspondence PhD PhD in India is less than the regular PhD course in India. It ranges from about INR 5,000 to INR 50,000 per semester, depending on the university/ college.

UGC (University Grants Commission) does not approve Distance PhD courses in India. The UGC released the circular containing this information in 2017, and it stated that the PhD degrees that have been granted by distance education mode would no longer be recognized. Therefore, only full-time PhD degrees and part-time Ph.D. degrees will be approved as valid PhD degrees in India. Students who want to pursue Correspondence PhD in India can now opt for UGC Approved Part-Time PhD Programs in India. Instead of a PhD in Computer Science through distance education, they can opt for Part-time courses in computer science, Management, law, and other programs.

Extension Activities

The post-graduate Department of Philosophy is one of the youngest department on campus and was started in March 1986 by the University of Mumbai. Dr. S.S Antarkar was the founder Head of the department, who laid great stress on the importance of learning all traditions of philosophy with equal openness. The syllabus thus reflected not only Indian philosophy of both, the Vedic and Śramana traditions, but also the Continental and Analytic traditions of the world. Since then, it has expanded its activities to provide foundation and diploma courses in disciplines like Yoga, Jainology, Vallabha Vedanta, Buddhist Studies, Indian Aesthetics and Communal Harmony, thus disseminating interest in the cultural and philosophical foundations of the epistemic, linguistic, metaphysical and creative heritage of humanity.

The discipline of Philosophy, which is both ancient and contemporary, is indispensable in current academia. Nevertheless, its practical import is apparent in all walks of life, such as national policy decisions, corporate management, media, law, ecology, gender, science, technology; in cultures and traditions that we inherit and also in those that influence us. None of these can function without sound and critical philosophical foundations.

Being holistic in nature, Philosophy is necessarily interdisciplinary in its outlook. To encourage this, the Department conducts workshops like the ‘Basic Concepts in Philosophy’ in the month of June/July for those who are from across disciplines and are interested in knowing more about philosophy. These are also intended to guide those attempting the Entrance exams for the MA programmes. Some workshops are specifically designed to help students in giving various exams like PET/NET/SET/UPSC and is an ongoing attempt by the faculty to enable students achieve their career requirements.

The Department offers a variety of Certificate/Diploma Courses in Indian Philosophy initiated primarily due to the efforts of Dr. Shubhada Joshi. Donations from private funders such as the Jaina Academy U.K. and the Bhagirathi Trust in India have helped the Department to set up Chairs under the Jaina Academy Educational and Research Center (JAERC) and the Vallabha Vedanta Academy (VVA) dedicated to the Philosophy of Jainism and Vaishnavism, respectively. Since 2014, the Center for Buddhist Studies in the Department of Philosophy (under the UGC tenth plan scheme), conducts International Conferences, Courses and Workshops in Buddhism.

The certificate and diploma courses run by the department thus are partly sustained by donations and partly function as self-supporting courses. Many of our post-graduate students avail of these courses and many of the students from these courses also avail of our post-graduate programme as continuation of their interest in Philosophy, thus creating an interactive and inter disciplinary framework within the discipline of Philosophy itself.

Philosophy Alumni (PA)

Since the formation of the Department of Philosophy in the year 1986 a number of students from the post graduate programmes have continued to be associated with the department of philosophy by attending its continuous series of events and special lectures. Some of them continue their learning by enrolling for research programmes like the M.Phil and PhD. It was Dr. S. S. Antarkar the founding member and former Head, Department of Philosophy, who actively encouraged the formation of Jainology Alumni in 1998 and later the Yoga Alumni was formed informally on the same lines in 2003.

The Alumni continues to participate in the activities of the Department such as attending lecture series of Teachers Day, Bombay Philosophical Society, World Philosophy Day, Workshops, Seminars and Conferences out of keen interest. The Alumni has also occasionally sponsored department seminars and conferences as well as improvement of infrastructure. They have also contributed by suggesting resource persons to the Department for talks.

Most of the Alumni are well placed, with many of them having gainful employment in teaching, government and private sectors and achieving success in their own fields.

In the year 2018 -19 the Philosophy Alumni of the department was formally inaugurated on the 25 th of August 2018 at 5 pm and some members volunteered to serve on the board of Philosophy Alumni. It was decided that all the informal Alumni groups will register under the Philosophy Alumni for greater unity.

Our Alumni are important stakeholders in the future development of the department of Philosophy and we hope that this platform enables past students to come together and continue to support the growth of the department. The membership of the Philosophy Alumni is open to all students who have passed out from the various post graduate and research programmes as well as the certificate and diploma courses in the Department of Philosophy.

The Philosophy Alumni can be contacted either through our Facebook page on universityofmumbaiphilosophyalumni or through email id [email protected]

Please do register and submit your feedback online through our website www.mu.ac.in /philosophy to the Department of Philosophy

PhD by Distance Education in India 2024

PhD-by-distance-Education-in-India

Distance education has become a vital aspect of today’s world of education. It has become the most sought after avenue of raising your salary or increasing your qualification. Various distance courses are available across India in multiple levels such as:

  • Higher secondary
  • Undergraduate
  • Postgraduate
  • Certificate courses

When it comes to completing a course with other obligations in life, distance learning is the best option. PhD by distance education in India can be obtained by applying to colleges that offer distance education Doctor of Philosophy degree.

PhD in Distance Education in India

PhD through distance education is gaining importance among the research scholars who could not pursue higher studies due to work pressure or some other reasons. Many people have the wrong idea that distance education does not involve teachers, and students need not go to schools or colleges. The idea is wrong.

In distance education, a student need not be physically present in the classroom. However, he or she may have to attend daily classes on her laptop or mobile phone at a particular time. These classes are conducted online by experienced teachers or by electronic presentations that are made for a clear understanding of the subjects. So, it is wrong to say that distance education does not involve teachers.

PhD by Distance Education in India

Moreover, sometimes a student may need to attend classes on special days for particular reasons. Some of them may be:

  • Doubt clearing
  • Repetition of chapters already taught
  • Face to face interactions
  • Examination

The system of distance education that requires students to visit the school on particular days is called the Hybrid system of distance learning. It is a fact that most of the reputed universities in India offer only full-term and part-time PhD programs, but some universities like Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open Universities (YCMOU) and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) still offer the PhD through distance education in India .

In the year 1840, England introduced uniform postage rates across the country. Sir Isaac Pitman, the pioneer of short-hand writing and stenography, took up this opportunity and started sending his courses to his students through mails. His mails contained exercises that were to be mailed back to him so that he could correct them. Thus the foundation of distance learning was laid, and the world was waiting to see a revolution in the field of education.

Later, important universities like the University of London started preaching through a distance correspondence course. The system chartered by the Queen herself had meritorious members coming from less affluent backgrounds to undergo further education and establish themselves in society.

Who Should Opt for PhD Through Distance Education in India?

Distance education has been changing lives for quite some years. Nowadays, even after a hard day of a full-time job, one can enjoy the comfort of his or her home and complete his Ph.D. course. PhD by distance education has broken the normal stereotype and has allowed different candidates coming from different backgrounds to opt for a Doctor of Philosophy, which seemed very far-fetched and difficult earlier.

Moreover, it has been noted that when a man enters his corporate life, he tends to move away from his studies due to workload. For a woman, it is widely seen as soon as she gets married and becomes a housewife; the burden of family life makes it difficult for her to continue her studies.

A working individual under no circumstances can attend daily classes in a university or a college. Moreover, most classes are during the morning, which also happens to be the peak working hour in most offices. However, a PhD candidate who is applying for a job will be paid more. Now, if a candidate has to earn more, he or she has to complete and upgrade his or her educational qualification. Thus, it is an absolute necessity for such candidates to complete their PhD through distance education .

These are some of the situations where distance education and acquiring degrees through distance education plays an important role. For a homemaker, receiving the correspondence study materials and studying them in her own free time can help her a lot in increasing her educational qualification and her value in society.

Additionally, if someone is physically challenged or terminally ill and is not being able to attend his or her classes daily can opt for completing his or her PhD degree through distance education. If there is will then there surely is a way and distance education is that way.

Is PhD Through Distance Education Affordable?

This is an absolute yes. PhD degrees obtained through distance education are very affordable. Moreover, the option of carrying on with your job while completing the course at the same time is a blessing. PhD gives you the comfort of your home and saves you the amount you used to spend on commute. As a result, a very important step in life can be taken at a very low cost.

Can anyone who desires to obtain a PhD, Get it?

The answer is yes. Given that you have the required marks in your graduation and masters, you can obtain PhD degree. Different universities and institutions offer PhD courses through correspondence. They have varying eligibility criteria and varied requirements which need to be fulfilled.

The university maintains a thorough track of the performance of its candidate, and accordingly, the teachers and professors at the university suggest changes or provide support. Most universities offering distance education have vast libraries with an extensive collection of books that could be accessed online and offline by candidates for references and citations.

Online PhD Programs in India

The education system has come under the influence of digital technology and more and more Universities started shifting to the online mode of study like never before. Gone are the days when online education was seen as the low priority medium of learning. Traditionally research scholars prefer to study regular research programs on the campus. In recent years many universities around the world have started offering online PhD programs.

The research programs are becoming very popular everywhere, and there is a high demand for Online PhD programs in India . Though several Institutes and colleges are offering online PhD programs in India, most of these online doctoral programs are not recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

But the Government’s approach to online education is slowly changing and the Ministry of education has started opening its doors for online teaching. In 2020, seven Universities were granted permission to offer online degree programs as a part of promoting online education programs.  In the Future, the government may allow PhD online programs in India for working professionals and teachers that could reshape the research programs in India.
