1000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program offered by the library to promote reading to newborns, infants and toddlers.

Designed for children from birth to age five, this program helps children develop the tools they need to become proficient readers and encourages parent and child bonding through the activity of reading together.

The goal is to read 1000 books with your child before the child reaches kindergarten age. Incentives for parents and children will be provided along the way.

With the support of this program, we hope that you and your child will develop a love of reading and an appreciation for the library and discover the joy in reading together.

To sign up for this program, create an account for your family on Beanstack . You will be able to register and track your progress through our Beanstack webpage or the Beanstack app available on Google Play and Apple App stores.

Be sure to add your child as a reader and set their grade level to “Babies and Toddlers” or “Preschoolers.” Once set up, your child will be able to join 1000 Books as well as other seasonal reading and learning adventures. If you need help registering, email the Youth Services department at [email protected] or visit the Youth Services desk during library hours.

You may register your child anytime until they enter kindergarten.

Spend time reading with your child every day. Everything you read together counts—even reading your child’s favorite book over and over again. Repetition helps to develop and expand early literacy skills. You can count books your child hears at library storytimes (virtual or in-person), at preschool, as well as reading with a sibling, caregiver, grandparents. It all adds up.

For recommendations, view our Storytime Shorts on YouTube or browse our book suggestions for kids , including our Storytime At Home guides. For personalized recommendations, complete a Personalized Picks request, and librarians will send you a curated list.

Log Reading and Earn Incentives

Log your reading in Beanstack to earn an online badge for every 100 books you read. Stop by the library when prompted to pick up any physical incentives.

You can also record your reading with a paper log, available at the Youth Services Information Desk. Bring your completed log to the library to pick up your incentive(s).

All incentives must be redeemed in-person within six months of completing the 1000 Books program.

About the Program

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years while providing children essential early literacy skills.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter Kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading. It is also a great way for children and their caregivers to bond!

Registration is ongoing. Children may finish the program anytime before beginning Kindergarten.

1000 books

Getting Started

Each child receives a reusable book bag upon registration. Small prizes are earned along the way!

Each bubble on the reading log equals one book title read.

Children may participate in the program only once; they may only begin the program at one branch.

Finished reading logs may be turned in at any branch regardless of where the child registered.

Families can use our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge on our  R EADsquared website or download the free READsquared app (see below), in addition to using our printable logs or their own paper.

If you've already started using the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten free app, you may continue doing so, or branch staff can help you transition your progress into READsquared.

Who can participate in this program?

Any child from birth until he or she enters kindergarten can participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

How long will the program take?

The program will take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The program is self-paced and how long it takes to finish will depend on how often you read together.

Can I count books I read to more than one child at a time?

YES, log them on each child’s sheet.

How many of my children can participate?

All of them (provided they have not yet started kindergarten).  Make it even more fun and read as a family!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How early can I start this program with my baby?

Birth! It’s never too early to start reading with and talking to your little ones.

Do the books we hear at story time count?

Of course! Every single book your little one hears, no matter who reads it, is an important part of their reading journey.

How can I log books we’ve read?

Every time you and your little one read a book, color in one of the circles on your paper tracking sheet or add the book to your reading list on the app.

I didn’t know about this program and now my little one is in pre-K, can we still start?

Absolutely! You can start any time before kindergarten. Check out the infographic below about how long the program will take depending on about how many books you read a day.

What books can we read?

Any book! The options are endless. We’ve got some suggested reading lists above for kids to read before kindergarten (check out the printable versions here and here – and in your sign up bag!).

I don’t know that many books…

Don’t worry, the librarians will help you find lots of books! Also, you don’t have to read 1,000 different books – you can read books more than once. Reading the same book 100 times counts as 100 books.

It’s More Than Just Reading

Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR), an initiative from the Public Library Association and Association for Library Service to Children, identifies 5 key practices to develop early literacy skills: talk, sing, read, write, and play. Library programs will focus on bringing these key practices to the forefront, as well as demonstrating ways to involve them daily in the lives of little ones. Check out these early literacy tip sheets on each of the 5 key practices from CLEL ( Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy ), which has wonderful resources for parents and caregivers on early literacy development.

The Benefits of Reading 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

1000 books before kindergarten research

The Library District encourages parents and caregivers to commit to the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” challenge!

Reading 1,000 books with your child before he or she starts school is the focus of this fun program. Any child from birth until they enter kindergarten can join in! Because public formal education does not typically start until age five or six, parents and caregivers play a critical role as their child’s first teacher during those early years of birth through five. The “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” challenge is a simple endeavor. Just set aside dedicated time each day to read a book, any book (and yes, you can reread those favorite stories), to your newborn, infant, or toddler, toward the goal of reading 1,000 books together before kindergarten.

Research demonstrates that young children who are read to on a regular basis have an advantage when learning to read for themselves. Reading together builds closeness and early literacy skills, which are the foundations for school success. Reading 1,000 books isn’t as hard as it might sound. If you read only one bedtime story every night for three years, you will have read 1,095 books. If you read just three books every day, you will have read 1,095 books in just one year!

1000 books before kindergarten research

• Ask about the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program at the Children’s Services desk in any library. Upon signing up, you will receive a welcome letter and your first reading log with spaces to write down your first 100 books. • Then relax and enjoy that quiet time reading together. It’s fun and will create memories for you and your child to cherish! • Write the titles of every book you share on the reading log. If you read a book more than once, you can record it every time. If you listen to a book in storytime, at preschool, or anywhere else, you can log those, too. • When you finish 100 books, bring your completed reading log to the library to receive a small prize and your next reading log. • After you finish 500 books, your child will receive a canvas book bag. (One bag per participating child.) • After finishing 1,000 books, you will receive a book to keep, and your child will have a great start on a lifetime love of books and reading! Check with library staff for ideas on great books to share and a schedule of library programs that are suitable for your child.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

 alt=

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is an early literacy program that encourages families and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their young children before they enter kindergarten. Research shows that reading to children at a young age can help them strengthen language skills, build vocabulary and instill a lifelong love of reading.

Register online or sign up at your local branch. Use the Beanstack app to track what is read and earn digital badges along the way.

Beanstack FAQs

How long will it take to complete the program.

One thousand books may seem like a lot, but it all depends on how often you read with your child. For instance, if you read:

  • Three books a day, you’ll finish in just one year.
  • Two books a day, you’ll finish in two years.
  • One book a day, you’ll finish in three years.

What books count toward the goal?

Every book you read counts, every time your child hears it.  This includes books read by siblings, books children hear at storytime or while at daycare.

Our library locations each have a special 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten collection  that are a great starting point. Each title in this collection was hand-selected by our librarians for this age group.

Can I read the same book again and again?

Repetition  is important to learning and you can count the same book each time you read it.

Is my child too young to start this program?

It's never too soon to start reading to a child. Infants learn about language by listening to others talk. By talking, reading stories and asking questions, you are helping to build a baby's vocabulary and letting them know that questions are invitations for a response.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a simple way for families and children to build a love of reading together.

Caregivers track each book they read with their child, from birth until they start kindergarten. Repeating books is OK!

The program is part of a national effort to help prepare kids for school by building reading habits. It also seeks to encourage caregiver and child bonding through reading.

According to 1,000 Books, the nonprofit that started the nationwide initiative:

“Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated as an early indicator of academic success. Public formal education does not typically start until ages 5-6. Before then, parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years.”
