ACE: Approved Continuing Education

ACE approval demonstrates that a provider or course has been rigorously reviewed and found to offer quality continuing education according to best practices.

ASWB’s Approved Continuing Education program has been designed to review and approve high-quality CE providers and courses, whether they are delivered in person or via distance learning. This approval means that social work continuing education programs are generally acceptable to social work regulatory boards across the United States and Canada.

Ace standards.

Regardless of whether a CE provider pursues individual course approval or provider approval, programs must adhere to the ACE standards outlined in the ACE Handbook.

States and provinces that accept ACE

The ASWB Approved Continuing Education program approves continuing education providers and individual programs. When social workers choose courses created and offered by ACE providers or individual courses approved by ACE, they can trust they will receive high-quality content accepted by most U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions to meet licensure renewal requirements.

For continuing education providers

With options for individual courses, conferences, or entire CE catalogs, top-notch social work continuing education providers benefit from ACE approval.

  • Compare course approval and provider approval
  • Questions? Email ACE.

Three ways to find social work CE credit

  • ACE providers Download a list of all approved ACE providers
  • Individual course and conference approval Approved individual courses and conferences are listed on our spreadsheet
  • Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education ASWB authorizes some Joint Accreditation providers to offer ACE credit to social workers

ACE individual course/conference approval

Individual course/conference approval evaluates individual courses and conference sessions and approves them for licensees to earn continuing education credit.

ACE provider approval

ACE provider approval is optimal for CE providers that offer a large number of courses or programs.

Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education

ACE collaborates with Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education for CE in multiple professions.

ACE approval

  • Serves as a mark of distinction recognized by social work licensing boards and social workers
  • Is currently recognized by most states and provinces in North America
  • Demonstrates that continuing education meets rigorous standards for quality and relevance
  • Supports competency in the social work profession
  • Allows providers to list and manage courses directly to an online database
  • Entitles providers to receive timely information on CE issues and requirements via the Continuing Competence newsletter

Are you eligible to apply to ACE?

  • Does your organization have a licensed social worker involved in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of social work continuing education?
  • Does your organization have someone with appropriate experience to serve as continuing education director?
  • Is your organization able to supply evaluation and documentation of programs?

If you can answer YES to all these questions, then you meet the minimum requirements and are eligible to apply to ACE.

Does the Internet Make Bullying Worse?

October 10, 2017, Memorial University

This lecture has a wide appeal to multidisciplinary service providers, including social workers, educators, law enforcement and other social service agencies, as well as parents, who are all concerned about child and family well being.

Dr. Faye Mishna,  dean and professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, will present findings on her research conducted among Toronto area students in Grades 4, 7 and 10 which found that 10% had been bullied over the Internet and through other technologies such as text, instant messaging and other social media. This lecture will share insights into how to identify the signs of cyber bullying and the kids victimized by it. There will be an emphasis on the importance of working with kids so they learn to be empathic and stand up for others. The implications of the research findings for social work practice, policy and research will be addressed.

This presentation will be recorded by the Center for Innovation in teaching and Learning (CITL) for future learning opportunities. Please be advised that attendance in person serves as consent to being recorded.

About the MSW via online delivery

  • Our MSW program is delivered entirely online through a learning management system known as Brightspace, which you can access from any computer. Learn more about the Brightspace system and course delivery.
  • It is important to note that this program is open only to residents of Canada (citizens and permanent residents) who are currently living in Canada.
  • The MSW by distance delivery is generally completed in  3 years of part-time study  [PDF - 90 KB]. It can be completed in as little as 2 years. We’ll work with you to create a course sequence that fits your life as well as your degree requirements .
  • You should expect to spend about 3 hours per course per week on course activities and 6-8 hours per course per week on readings and/or assignments, just like a campus class.
  • Flexible: each course is divided into modules. Within each module, you can log in to the course and complete your work at times that fit your schedule.
  • All tests and assignments can be submitted online. You do not have to arrange for proctored examination locations in your home community.
  • As an MSW student, you will complete a 450-hour Field Placement (Practicum) at a social work agency in your home community.
  • Your distance experience will be comparable to the campus experience, and your degree will be exactly the same.
  • We help you to navigate your online courses. Email [email protected] if you have any questions.

Internationally Educated Social Work Professionals (IESW) Bridging Program

social work continuing education online canada

The Chang School is proud to offer the provincially funded Internationally Educated Social Work Professionals (IESW) Bridging Program to support immigrant social workers in qualifying to work in Ontario – and find meaningful work in our social services sector.

This program has a stellar track record of helping learners find jobs: since the program began in 2005, 89 percent of certificate program graduates have been hired in the social services field within one year of graduation. We have won numerous awards, including the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) Leaders in the Social Work Community Award, the Toronto Star Immigrant Champion Award, and the Champion of Diversity Award from the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism.

Our graduates work for a wide range of employers, including hospitals, child welfare agencies, community health centers, settlement agencies, government settings, and community mental health agencies.

After completing the program, you’ll graduate with a Certificate in Canadian Social Work Practice . This certificate includes:

  • Credit courses
  • Unpaid work-experience placement
  • Social-work skills-based workshops
  • Job-search support
  • Coaching and mentorship
  • Access to the Internationally Educated Social Workers Network (IESWN)

We work closely with employers and use an evidence-based curriculum to ensure you’ll get all the real-world experience and up-to-date skills you’ll need to thrive in Canadian social work.

Coursework includes current legislation and policies; codes of ethics; standards of practice; current theoretical, legal, and practice approaches; and communication skills for the workplace. All Certificate in Canadian Social Work Practice courses comply with Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) accreditation standards.

Are you ready to bring your social-work expertise to Ontario? We’re here to help you get started.

Program Details:

  • Part-time program
  • Offered from June to July of the following year, with intensive job search support sessions in July and August
The certification program included practical exercises, case studies, and simulations that allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This hands-on approach helped me develop essential skills. Plus, I met wonderful professors and classmates during my time at TMU that I can now call friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the language requirements for the IESW program so rigorous? Social work professionals require well-developed verbal and written English language skills to be able to counsel clients, discuss sensitive personal matters, keep detailed case records, prepare written reports, and make professional presentations. This is why IESWs are screened and supported for English language proficiency.

What kind of documentation do I need in order to prove my Ontario residency? A copy of your Ontario health insurance card or Ontario driver’s licence are acceptable as proof of Ontario residency.

What kind of documentation do I need to prove my eligibility to work in Canada? A copy of Canadian citizenship, confirmation of permanent residence, refugee claim or convention refugee status are acceptable as proof of Canadian work eligibility.

How can I have my international degree and credentials assessed by the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) or World Education Service (WES) ? If you have a social work degree, you can find information about how to have your international degree/credentials assessed by the Canadian Association of Social Workers by visiting the CASW website .

However, if your degree is not in social work but in humanities or social sciences and you meet all the eligibility criteria, your degree should be assessed by the World Education Service (WES) on a course-by-course basis. Visit the WES website for details.

What are Canadian Language Benchmarking (CLB)-based assessments? Can I submit language scores from another language assessment such as TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS instead of CLB- based assessments? Your test scores from Canadian Language Benchmarking (CLB)-based assessment, Instructor Assigned CLBs, Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), CLBA (Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment), or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) are acceptable as proof of language proficiency.

If I am eligible for the Certificate in Canadian Social Work Practice but unable to participate, must I reapply for the following year? Yes; however, you will not be asked to resubmit all of your documents. Please contact us at [email protected] or 416-979-5000, ext. 554095, for further clarification.

To find more about the centres that conduct the language assessments, visit the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks website .
