Signing tips for assignments and presentations

Oh no! One of my level-200 ASL students seriously considered dropping the ASL course on the first day of class when she learned that everyone was assigned to give a short presentation at the near end of the semester. It wasn't due until three months later, one could already feel the sweat dripping down one's back and the heart was racing.

Well, at the end of the semester, the student confessed that she was glad that she decided to take courage and overcome fear. Giving a presentation in front of a class or a camera can be terrifying. Here are some tips and ideas that may be helpful on how to improve your signing (expressive) skill for your video assignments or in-class presentation.

Your ASL instructor may have some different expectations from this. So get to know your ASL instructor and follow her/his guidelines! This post is intended to be an entertainment value.

Preperation and practice

Asking my students in beginner-level ASL, (translated as) "How many times have you repeated signing an assignment in front of your camera?", I could tell who is lying from honest/diligent ones. The honest ones would reply, "Many, many times!" "About 10-20 times!" Poor souls, I commented. We all laughed.

Self-corrections for errors

In reality, practice many times. Explaining to my students, after you practice many times and when you're ready to record a video, it's perfectly okay to self-correct a small mistake in your video. Just correct it and move on. It won't affect your mark. E.g. mispronouncement. But, if you make a big mistake like a sentence or paragraph structure, start over.

When making an error in signing production, you self-correct way too far...

Exaggerating self-corrections or making big self-corrections take relatively too much of the instructor's time. Don't sign "sorry" and/or "again".

Simply briskly "wave-no" or quickly "shake-head" and re-do the previous sign and move on. A few self-corrections (single words) in the video would be fine. If too many or when it becomes messy, re-do the video.

Practice and preparation improves your degree of fluency for your level and earns you a nice point. It also saves (Deaf) instructor's time and helps maintain the instructor's attention, especially when they watch tens and tens of videos of slow signers that take all day or two of marking.

A degree of fluency doesn't mean fast signing. Signing fluently and signing fast (with the intention to make one looks impressive) are not synonymous. Signing fast as in hurry can become sloppy, blurry, or unnatural. It lacks intonation and sometimes clarity.

Your facial expression may or may not look like this.

In this video, the Frozen character does a better job. Don't freeze your lips which in turn freeze the whole face. Break ice and relax in front of your camera (easy to say, ha). Intonation or prosody can add a very nice natural look to your signing.

Avoid your hands down every sentence (or worse, mid-sentence). Use natural pauses between paragraphs, not sentences. Though infrequently happening, mid-sentences are a big no-no as they break grammatical flow and coherence of information. Okay, now. How does. It looks. Or sounds to you? Got it?

If you happen to pause because you're thinking, hold your hands as in "umm" instead of putting your hands down.

Maintaining eye contact

Likewise for eye contact, avoid regularly looking at your notes as it breaks the flow. Or even the whole presentation if you're reading your notes. Glance only when you don't remember what to do next or check for something (a spelling or word). But, don't read aloud in signing because you need to maintain eye contact with your audience through the lens or in class to engage them. Rely on your heart, not notes.

Linguistic competency

Use proper grammar what you have learned, such as contrastive structure, listing/ranking, OSV, SVO, conjunctions, interjections, classifiers, verb inflections, and so on. Proper non-manual grammar can make a difference in your mark.

Use pronouns instead of repeating the nouns. Use spatial references and ranking/listing and such when needed.

Use vocabulary what you've learned -- a few ones that most students in your class most likely underused.

Fingerspelling

Avoid bouncing the alphabetical letters when fingerspelling.

Like fluency, fingerspelling fast is not the same as fingerspelling fluently. Clarity over speed. Fingerspell in a natural flow.

Overcoming camera jitters

Students may typically feel jitters during a test, not to mention that having a camera in front of the student adds more jitters during an ASL expressive assessment. If you find yourself intimidated by the one-eyed magnified lens scrutinizing you, consider a few exercises to overcome fear.

For your video assignment done from home, set up a camcorder in front of you. Get used to it staring at you while you're working on your video assignment, practicing your signing skills, or whatever you do. Turn the video camera on while you practice signing. Then watch one or few of your videos. Delete the video files if you wish. Keep the best one.

Go with the natural flow; don't race with time. Follow your natural rhythm (pace) when signing. Do your best but don't be a perfectionist, which possibly create more mistakes and tension. It is okay to make mistakes and self-correct them immediately during your practice in front of the camera.

Still feeling anxious in front of your video assignment? Discreetly bring your little furry stuffed animal and put it on the top or on the side of the camera. Nobody is looking! Have humor. But one thing, avoid rhythmically signing to the music.

Rather than doing the right things the first time, try to stretch your limit. Test, experiment, and play during your practices before you decide on the final piece.

It's not uncommon that our students did shoot their video 10, 20, or even 50 times that they lost their count. On the bright side, count these takes as practice.

SIGN LANGUAGE • Used primarily by hearing-impaired people, • Uses a different medium: hands, face, and eyes (rather than vocal tract or ears). • NOT derived from spoken language

Why Study Sign Language? • Sign Language exhibits same functional properties and follow same universal principles as spoken language—possible evidence of universal grammar (UG). • Study of sign language provides unique insight into the nature of language itself. • Brain function similarities indicate language not based on hearing and speech.

MYTHS about sign language • It’s universal: NO. ASL =/= British sign language =/= Spanish sign language • It’s like mime: NO. Some signs may be iconic, but others are not (e.g.,‘apple’ in ASL). Mime can use the whole body; sign language uses only an area between the waist and head. • Has no grammar on its own. NO. ASL is NOT “English on the hands”. English grammar and ASL grammar are very different; e.g., ASL has a free word order; ASL does not have tense markers. • Cannot convey the same meaning/complexities as spoken language. NO. ASL speakers can express anything they want in ASL.

Why is it important? • Not to marginalize disabled people. • Spread Language. • Possible as any other way of communication (radio, letter, television, newspapers, magazines…)

The most effective way to communicate with a Deaf person is to use sign language or an interpreter.

Did you know that when two Deaf people meet for the first time they usually share information about what school they attended. This helps them to establish their ties with the Deaf community.

Deaf people strengthen their social bonds by participating in Deaf clubs and activities such as, athletic tournaments, churches, picnics, and other social events.

·When you meet a Deaf person for the first time they will want to know: 1.your first and last name 2.whether you are deaf, hard of hearing, or hearing 3.who is teaching you the language and culture 4.where you are studying why you are learning ASL

You should always use your dominant hand to sign. If you are ambidextrous, choose one hand as your dominant hand and be consistent.

ASL (American Sign Language) is one of the world’s many sign languages

American Sign Language is a language that incorporates mime, and picture-like images to express and convey abstract ideas and concepts. Also, ASL uses space and movement to convey meaning.

ASL is used in Canada and the U.S.

Bellringer • ASL is now the fourth most used language in the United States.

ASL and the culture are transmitted from generation to generation primarily through residential schools and Deaf adults.

ASL Grammar • ASL Phonology • Hand-shape, location, movement, palm orientation (features on their own may mean nothing) • There’s also assimilation, syllabic constraints, etc, (as in the in the phonology of spoken languages).

ASL Grammar • ASL morphology • Parts of speech are also nouns (N),verbs (V), adjectives (A), pronouns (Pro), adverbs (Adv). • A basic form can be inflected in ASL; e.g., Give and different ‘aspects’ (Clark, p. 84). • Also, nouns are associated with spatial points. Moving between those mark subject/object and pronominal relations. • ASL classifiers (relationals) are embedded in V signals • ASL signs can form compounds

ASL Grammar • ASL Syntax • Word order: SVO (same as English). However, ASL tends to be a free word order language. • ASL allows PRO drop (“subjectless” sentences). • Facial expressions express emotions, but also signal syntactic relationships. “Today snow. Trip cancel.”

Structure of ASL • Five Basic Parameters • Shape of the hand • Place of articulation (location) • Movement • Palm Orientation • Region of the hand contacting body • Orientation of the hand to body • Orientation of hands to each other • Facial Expressions

Some differences/similarities • In spoken language, phonemes occur linearly; in ASL primes cannot (spatial) • ASL involves discrete components, just like spoken language • ASL has minimal pairs, as does spoken language (words differing in only one aspect). • Speakers of both can have dialectsand be perceived to have accents.

Sign Language • Fingerspelling/Manual Alphabet • Words without assigned signs may be spelled • Some commonly spelled words become lexicalized (e.g. NO) • Not the same handshape is used in every sign language

Fingerspelled loan signs are two to five letter, commonly used words that have their own unique patterns of movement. These movements are different from regular fingerspelling. Instead, these words have become ASL signs. Examples: dog, OK, car, bus, bank, early,….

When you see a fingerspelled word you should try to see the shape and movement pattern of the word rather than try to see each letter.

When you fingerspell a word try to keep you hand slightly to the right of your face and below your chin. Avoid bouncing each letter.

Fingerspelling is not a substitute for a sign. If you don’t know a sign for a word, first try to act it out, point to it, describe, gesture, draw. Fingerspelling should be used as a last resort.

Sign Language • Dialects and Registers • There are differences between groups within the same language. Black ASL may have properties (handshapes, certain position of certain fingers, size of spaced used, etc) different from other forms of ASL. • Also, formal vs informal contexts affect some properties of ASL. For example, deletion is not common in formal contexts; the signing space is bigger in formal contexts, etc.

British Sign Language - Learn BSL Online

Lesson Plan – “Don’t Talk to Me!”

Introduction, resources for this lesson, starter activity, main activity 1, main activity 2, main activity 3, plenary activity 4, starter activity.

In this starter activity the class will think of ways to communicate with each other without speaking.

Set up a timer with an alarm (on a Smart Board ideally).  Explain to your class that they have 3 minutes in which to position themselves in a line along one of the classroom walls.  Tell them that they must be arranged in order of their birthdays through the year (not in age order) – starting with January at one end and ending with December at the other.  While doing this they must not talk or make any noises with their mouth.  Ensure that they understand the instructions and then begin the timer.  While this activity is taking place do not give any prompts other than to inform them of the time remaining and to remind them that they should not be speaking.  Try to observe the different methods that are being used to achieve the task.  Once the time is up ask the students, in order, to call out their birthdays to see how effectively this has been completed.

Once the class have returned to their places have a discussion with them about how difficult they found the task.  Ask them to explain the techniques that they used to accomplish the task and talk about other ways that it may have been achieved.  Examples of this could include:

  • Holding up fingers to represent the numbers of months and dates
  • Writing in the air
  • Mouthing / Lip-reading
  • Writing down on a piece of paper
  • Sign language
  • Pointing at a calendar

Explain that these methods of communication are known as “ non-verbal communication ” (apart from writing, which is ‘written communication’) *.  If the class does not come up with all of the above methods then discuss them as alternatives to what they have come up with.

* For the purposes of this lesson we are defining non-verbal communication as communication that is not written and does not involve the voice.  There are other slightly varying definitions.

MAIN ACTIVITY 1

This activity works best if a projector or Smart Board is available however the slideshow can be shown on a computer monitor or printed out.  The slideshow is available in PowerPoint and PDF format from the resource section above.

This slideshow consists of a series of 12 photographs each containing a person who is using a form of non-verbal communication. Have a brief discussion around each photograph thinking about the aspects that show non-verbal communication.  Discuss the importance of facial expression and body language and how these features are very important components of communication.  Also ask the class what they believe the person in the photograph is trying to communicate.  Your class will probably find they are already pretty expert at recognising the meaning of non-verbal communication!

The final image in the slideshow is of two people using sign language. As part of your discussion about this image ask the class what they know about sign language.  Prompt the discussion with questions such as “who would use sign language?” .  Encourage the class to discuss the fact that people who are Deaf or have a hearing impairment might use sign language to communicate if they are unable to hear speech clearly.

Ask the class if they know anyone who is Deaf or has a hearing impairment.  Encourage them to think about people such as their grandparents who may have developed a hearing impairment as they got older.  It is important at this point to explain that many people who have a hearing impairment can still hear but may need a hearing aid to boost certain sounds.  Explain that not all people who have a hearing impairment use sign language.  Sign language is used most often by people who were born profoundly deaf or became deafened at a young age (perhaps through illness or injury).  People who have a mild hearing loss are unlikely to use sign language as they will probably have enough hearing, possibly with the help of a hearing aid, to use speech.

Explain to the class that sign language is a completely separate language to spoken English and it comprises of a mixture of hand signs, gestures, and body language.  Your students may be surprised to find out that sign language is not the same in every country around the world - sign languages have evolved around the world in the same way that spoken languages have, resulting in different countries having different signed languages.  The sign language used in the UK is called British Sign Language – known as BSL for short.  Recent calculations estimate that in the UK there are around 156,000 people who use British Sign Language as their first language (see  http://www.bda.org.uk/News/127 ).

MAIN ACTIVITY 2

In this activity the class is going to learn some British Sign Language.  This is a great skill to learn for when they meet someone who uses BSL but it is also fun to be able to hold secret conversations with each other without other students (or teachers!) knowing what they are talking about.

Begin by explaining to the class that almost every English word or phrase has it’s own BSL sign however for words that do not have a sign, such as names, and for words that you do not know the sign for, you can spell the English word using the BSL fingerspelling alphabet.  Each letter of the alphabet has it’s own sign and this is the best place to begin learning BSL.

BSL-Fingerspelling-Alphabet

Provide each member of the class with a printed copy of the BSL fingerspelling alphabet and then as a whole group, also using the alphabet slideshow if you wish, briefly go through the alphabet to demonstrate each letter.

The class can now split into small groups to go through the alphabet again.  Ask each student to learn their own names using the fingerspelling alphabet and then encourage them to test each other’s fingerspelling skills by spelling their names to each other – you might like to ask for a couple of volunteers to spell their names to the whole class.

MAIN ACTIVITY 3

BSL-Greeting-Signs

PLENARY ACTIVITY

This activity will reinforce with the students the idea of non-verbal communication and will also expand their BSL vocabulary.

As a whole class, begin the ‘Guess the Signs’ slideshow. This is best viewed on a Smart Board or projected but can also be downloaded and printed.

The students will be shown a slide containing a single word, for example; ‘cow’. Ask the students to make up a sign or movement that could be used for ‘cow’ (remind students that they must not use speech – only gestures). This slideshow displays a single word on a slide, then the illustration of the BSL sign for that word on the following slide showing.  Before revealing the illustration for each sign select one or two students to share with the class what they think the sign might be. Once they have had a go at guessing the sign reveal the illustration and encourage students to practice the true BSL sign with you, before moving onto the next word.

CONTINUATION IDEAS

  • Encourage the class to greet each other each day with one of the BSL signs from the greetings poster.
  • Print out and display in your classroom additional BSL vocab posters from www.british-sign.co.uk
  • Encourage students to practice and improve their fingerspelling skills by using the online “3 minute fingerspelling challenge” –  www.british-sign.co.uk/challenge
  • Ask the students to use the fingerspelling word printing tool at  www.british-sign.co.uk  to print fingerspelling labels for your classroom.
  • Visit  www.british-sign.co.uk/dictionary  and browse the dictionary to learn more BSL signs.

Learning American Sign Language

Learning American Sign Language (ASL) takes time, patience, practice, and a sense of humor.

If you are a parent of a newly-identified child who is deaf or hard of hearing, you can request ASL instruction from your child’s early intervention system. Early intervention systems are designed to help your child develop in all areas. These systems also are designed to provide services to families so that families can support their child. More information is available at Sign Language for Parents .

Individual signs are relatively easy to learn. Like any spoken language, ASL is a language with its own unique rules of grammar and syntax. To learn enough signs for basic communication and to sign them comfortably, can take a year or more. Some people pick up signs more slowly than others, and if that is the case with you, don’t be discouraged. Everyone learns sign language at their own speed. Be patient and you will succeed in learning the language. The rewards will be well worth the effort!

You can start learning ASL by attending a sign language class. Sign language classes can be found at community colleges, universities , libraries, churches, organizations/clubs of the deaf, and lots of other places. You can also expand your knowledge of ASL by practicing your signs with people who are deaf or hard of hearing and also know ASL. Generally, people who know ASL are patient about showing new signers how to sign different things, the correct way to sign something, and usually, they will slow down their signing so that you can understand them, too. They are also willing to repeat words or statements if you do not understand them the first (or even the second) time.

Other ideas include: * Local/State Colleges & Universities * Community Centers for the Deaf * Speech and Hearing Centers * American Sign Language Teachers Association * State Schools for the Deaf * Deaf Education programs within local mainstreamed schools * NAD State Association Affiliates * State Commisions/Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing * State Chapters of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)

ASL is a visual language. With signing, the brain processes linguistic information through the eyes, and facial expressions and body movements play an important part in conveying information. It is possible to sign without using facial expressions or body movements, but doing so may give a mixed message, be confusing, or be misunderstood. It will also look odd or unnatural to native signers.

Sign language is not a universal language — each country has its own sign language, and regions have dialects, much like the many languages spoken all over the world. If you were to travel to another state and have an opportunity to sign with a person who knows ASL, you may notice that s/he will use some signs differently than you. These signs are known as “regional” signs, and you can think of them as the equivalent of an “accent.” It does not mean that people in your state are signing incorrectly. It is just a normal variation in ASL, and such regional signs add flavor to your understanding of ASL.

When you don’t know the sign for something, spell the word or words (called “fingerspelling”). When you discover there is no sign for a word, you should not invent or make up a new sign. To do so may violate the grammatical rules of ASL, or may be unintentionally offensive.

Speed is not crucial in sign language. It is more important to sign clearly, even if you have to do it at a slower pace. When people often ask you to repeat yourself, it is a signal that you should slow down and try to sign as clearly as possible. Do not feel embarrassed if you sign slowly. It is important to get your message across, to connect with another person, and to be understood. There are no shortcuts to effective communication.
